NYRR Homecoming Scotland Run 10K ? April 11

Postby Karl » Tue Mar 24, 2009 10:05 pm

The second NYRR club points race this year is the Homecoming Scotland Run 10K, held in Central Park on Saturday, April 11. Earlier this month at the Coogan?s 5K we had just enough runners for scoring men?s masters and open teams. So I?m hoping we can build some momentum early, and carry it through the year.

Race information is available at: http://www.nyrr.org/races/2009/r0411x00.asp

Race fees go up on March 28.

Please post if you plan on running so we?ll know if we have a team. I?m in.

By the way, anybody choosing to run in a kilt usually gets seeded at the front of the first corral.

I'm entered already. Bear in mind it's a capped race that could sell out early, so register now if you definitely plan to run it.

The NYRRC website says the race is almost sold out, so if you have not registered yet, you should do it right away.

Orkney

Postby Karl » Mon Apr 06, 2009 12:24 am

My father's latest hobby has been researching our family's genealogy. Our ancestry is mainly German and Dutch. However, recently I called my father and asked him if we have any Scottish ancestry because I wanted to run a race in a kilt. After a slight pause on the phone he said he'd have to get back to me on that.

Sure enough, a couple of days later he e-mails me back to say he found a Scottish link. Turns out my 33rd great-grandfather Ragnwald van M?re (born circa 825) was a Jarl (roughly the equivalent of an Earl) on the isles of Orkney, north of the Scottish mainland.

There is even a Orkney regional tartan. Although the tartan is probably of a relatively modern design, and my ancestor Ragnwald almost certainly never wore it, I feel I could wear it in good faith.

Unfortunately the turnaround time on a custom kilt is about 6 to 8 weeks, so that's not going to happen. At least not this year.

Our team for the Scotland Run 10K:

SOJA MATT M26 37:20
LEITZ KARL M42 40:43
STRONG MICHAEL M53 52:14

My favorite quote from the TV show Little Britain: "Planning a vacation and the Arctic is all booked-up? Why not try Scotland?"

The next NYRR team points race is the Healthy Kidney 10K on Saturday, May 16th.

Lets just pretend today's race never happened... Actually Healthy Kidney is on the exactly same course as Scotland, I believe, so I am hoping for at least 1 minute improvement.
